Black Lives Matter, Color of Ass, Dr Seuss, Equal Rights, Equality, Jim Crow, Medgar Evers, Mortality Average Based on Race, President Obama, Reverse Racism, Unequal Prison Sentencing, Urban Blight, White Privilege
“White privilege is dead,” the man said to me,
“Equality reigns in land of the free,
Obama is Pres, Oprah’s on TV:
Equal rights for all; it’s plain now to see.”
I was struck dumb by the words that I heard,
how could he believe a tale so absurd?
“Trials of yore like old Medgar Evers’
Have been overturned, Jim Crow’s noose severed.”
I wish it was so, I wish it were true,
But view he’s taking is patently skewed.
“This Black Lives Matter,” he declared,
“Just reverse racism that’s so unfair.”
Wanted to counter but how to portray
Racial inequality in USA?
Uneven sentencing for black and white?
Mortality, income and urban blight?
“Had to struggle for the places I’ve got,
Won’t hear me boohooing like those have not’s.
There’s jobs to be had and work to be done
These guys talk like whites are all favorite sons.”
I shook my head in a Seussical way
No longer certain of card I should play.
He’d had comfortable youth with mom and pop
Blind to the privilege of half that was top
”The car you drove to the job that you had,
When you were in high school, a fine young lad,
How did it arrive in your folks’ garage?
Was it Mom magic like prom date’s corsage?”
“No,” he assured me, cocky as can be,
“Earned every cent paid for that Chevy Caprice.”
Interesting tale he continued to spin,
How, I asked him, did the purchase begin?
“My daddy loaned me the dough for my ride.
Paying him back was a source of great pride.”
Irony absent from bootstrap story
I smiled, nodded and said, ”Good for thee.”
Parted company, went his way, I mine,
I just shook my head at man who is blind.
Wish I had magic spectacle glasses
That showed advantage color of ass is.
