I turned fifty-five in April, which is good because as the meme says:
Birthdays are good for your health
Studies have shown that people
who have more birthdays live longer
Half a century plus ten percent has brought about a lot of changes, some estupendo, some terrible. (Read estupendo y terrible en español, por favor.)
Communication however, to quote C. J. H. Dickens, can be summed up thus:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
Did you read the one-hundred-nineteen word Charles Dickens sentence or did you just blow through it? Too long? Too difficult? Been there, read that?
We live in a time where glib, slick, irrational and trite are values that we cherish. Reasoned argument? Thoughtful insight? No time for that, compadre, we want it all and we want it now!
Oh, I understand that we’re all busy, I mean, who has time for thought when we’re in the middle of a Facebook debate? I attack with my meme, you counter with yours, he pulls an article from Occupy Democrats which she parries with an opinion piece from Fox News.
Van Morrison summed it up with Domino:
There’s no need for argument
There’s no argument at all
And if you never hear from him
That just means he didn’t call
So I’m throwing in the towel, taking the twenty-first-century approach; shorter is sweeter, reason is dead, if you need convincing my memes will pummel your head.
After all, who has time for reading -n- thinking?
And the best thing is that the longest of my memes is only twelve words!
Hey, if you don’t like it riposte with your own, and if you do then repost with mine.
