Look beneath the surface, strip away life’s thin veneer
Mouths that you see smiling hold teeth that tear and shear
Oh, so prim and proper are masks that we assume
But come the blazing fire our compassion is consumed

Most believe they’re immune to disease making the rounds
But no inoculation keeps madness out of bounds
We, the fit and fetid look on with such distaste
Think we’re so much better than rest of human waste

Only takes a whistle to awaken dogs of war
Easily revert to savage; desperate pleas we just ignore
Easy to demarcate line between us and them
Ours it is a just cause while they’re devil’s henchmen

So quickly to cry havoc and war dogs we release
Through it all keep insisting our goal is a just peace
Just peace where the vanquished must forever bow down
For war is to justice as a sage is to a clown

There are those who believe lions shall rest with lambs
But the world’s most brutal killer is the savage known as man
If we ever hope to arise from this most depraved of states
We must each reject the great love we hold in our hearts for hate

You, who hear in horror truth that I declare
Swear that all the hatred lives solely way out there
But each of us is feral deep down where the truth hides
Contains a raging beast that though caged, still abides

Apocalyptic future gathers strength all around
Pray that I’m mistaken but I fear we’re all hell bound
Fear it is contagious far too many in its grip
We all must keep a vigil lest in its power we shall slip

Look beneath the surface, strip away life’s thin veneer
Mouths that you see smiling hold teeth that tear and shear
Oh, so prim and proper are masks that we assume
But come the blazing fire our compassion is consumed
