Torrential rain, torrential rain, torrential rain
Deluge pouring down that bears sorrow away
Cascading sheets fall with lightning strike and thunder clap
When our souls are cleansed perhaps then we’ll love Him back

Into each life a little rain must fall
This metaphor for sadness touches all
But though gray skies can give us heavy hearts
Moses’ faith in God caused Red Sea to part

Easy for a man to become enslaved
Ensnared by chains of gold and fame that we crave
Seeking solace when we feel tiny and weak
We must open up our hearts to hear love speak

The marks we miss as sins we do commit
Are anchors dragging us down bit by bit
Ever further into depths of darkest void
Descent can be halted with love as our buoy

Torrential rain, torrential rain, torrential rain
Deluge pouring down that bears sorrow away
Cascading sheets fall with lightning strike and thunder clap
When our souls are cleansed perhaps then we’ll love Him back

Do we toil in quest of security?
Or to satisfy graven images we see?
Lust for stately mansions and Mercedes Benz
When does competition with the Joneses end?

How high upon our plate can we stack food?
How do acts of gluttony square with Golden Rule?
Fleshly pleasures as gift from God above?
Hedonism’s more self-abuse than love

What repressed ego, what tortured soul
Is driven by desire to let world know
That luxury penthouse high in stratosphere
Is where shepherds look down on sheep they shear

Torrential rain, torrential rain, torrential rain
Deluge pouring down that bears sorrow away
Cascading sheets fall with lightning strike and thunder clap
When our souls are cleansed perhaps then we’ll love Him back

Dowsing waters also can wash sin away
Lead us to recovery with penitential prayer
God, with your love please wash away our sins
And with baptismal fount make us clean again

Power of love in you is manifest
Loving God, take us, your children, to your breast
May torrent that you visit upon the earth
Cleanse from all your children that which hides our worth

White light refracted to rainbow in the sky
Falling deluge’s power can cleanse or make us die
Forces at work that warp our values and our lives
Surely, Earth has love enough for all to thrive

Torrential rain, torrential rain, torrential rain
Deluge pouring down that bears sorrow away
Cascading sheets fall with lightning strike and thunder clap
When our souls are cleansed perhaps then we’ll love Him back
