You carried me, you gave me life, and reared me in love;
Fifty-six times your voice sang out to celebrate my birth.
Today I feel your presence enjoining me to smile;
Your essential elements urge me to joy and mirth.
This day’s commemoration remembers your labor pains;
I fight off melancholy knowing you’re now at peace.
Amidst the celebration swear I hear you call my name
I’ll save a slice of cake for you to share when we meet again.
