She walked out mid-shift on a Friday night
left her uniform atop porc’lain white.
Didn’t say a word, no French, “Bon voyage!”
she just slipped away like a flight montage.

I was elbows deep in the cold sweet stuff,
talking ice-cream here with a Farrell’s ruff.
Wore a tiny tie and a red apron
was my senior year working hot cauldron.

It was trial by fire, was a hectic place,
full-a energy with frenetic pace,
used to have nightmares at end of work shift
from the beat, beat, beat brain’s percussionist.

Know I stood amazed, yeah I stood aghast
that our new waitress chose to exit fast,
left her tables STAT ‘cuase she couldn’t cope
found the flames too hot so she just said, “Nope!”

I was just eighteen, full of vinegar,
throw the gauntlet down and some smack I’d serve.
Never had a thought ’bout the weight of stones
that were so crushing that white-flag’d be flown.

I was born and raised to stand own two feet
nothing lower than to accept defeat.
Yeah I’d scream, “More weight!” like a Giles Corey
run myself to death, face adversity.

I’ve been thinking back lo these two-score years
on my hubris youth with a flood of tears,
the colors I fly torn and tattered now
and my, “Bring it on!” long ago bid, “Ciao!”

I still stand steadfast, I won’t run away,
won’t quit job undone, but know price I pay.
Gotta set limits, gotta say, “Enough!”
gotta ask quarter ‘fore consumed mastiff.

‘Cuz them big ole dogs gonna eat me up
with my twisted bones and arthritic strut.
No, I won’t walk out, I won’t quit mid-shift,
can just take so much playing working stiff.

I’m a Shakespeare clown with my highs and lows
want the boss’ nod but so far I’ll go.
In transition state, everything’s in flux,
I’ll just grit my teeth and I’ll show my pluck.

But I’m telling you, want the world to know,
I won’t kill myself over coins hollow.
Got a cooler head that right now prevails
but feed my int’rests or you’ll see my tail.
