Speaking of rape culture and toxic masculinity, I would like to share two songs released circa 1970, I Gotcha (1972) by Joe Tex and Young Girl (1968) by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.

Joe Tex’s song is rape, plain and simple. It is an anthem of entitlement, a psalm of patriarchy and a ode of ownership. In a word? I Gotcha is disgusting.

Our POV singer (That’s “Point of View” for those not in the know) states explicitly to a woman that because she had previously promised him that he would be her next amore that he was entitled to her. Joe Tex notes that his intended tries to slip away from him unnoticed, but he’s not putting up with that. Nope, she needs to shut up and put out. His words indicate that he grabbed, pinioned, raped and gloated.

This song was in the Top 100 for 21 weeks, in the top ten for nine weeks and peaked at #2. Number Two! What a perfect placement for this piece of crap. (Ask me how I really feel.)

I Gotcha
(Songwriter: Joe Tex)

I gotcha, uh huh, huh
You thought I didn’t see ya now, didn’t ya, uh huh, huh
You tried to sneak by me now, didn’t ya, uh huh, huh
Now gimme what you promised me, give it here
Come on
Hey
Good God
Hey
Hey
You promised me the day that you quit your boyfriend
I’d be the next one to ease on in
You promised me it would be just us two, yeah
I’d be the only man kissin’ on you, yeah
Now, kiss me
Hold it a long time, hold it
Don’t turn it a-loose, now hold it
A little bit longer, now hold it
Come on
Hold it
Hold it
Hold it
Hold it
Now ease up on me now, good God
Hey
Good God
Hey
The girl’s alright, y’all
Ha ha
Good God
You made me a promise and you’re gonna stick to it
You shouldn’t have promised if you weren’t gonna do it
You saw me and ran in another direction
I’ll teach you to play with my affection
Now, give it here
You never should’ve promised to me, give it here
Don’t hold back, now give it here
Don’t say nothin’, just give it here
Come on, give it here
Give it here
Give it here
Give it here
Give it to me, now
Good God
Hey
I gotcha
Shouldn’t made a promise to me
I gotcha
You never should’ve promised to me, gotcha
Give it on, here
I gotcha
You thought you got away from me, didn’t ya?
I gotcha
Ha ha ha
Oh, I gotcha
Give it on up, I gotcha
Give it on here, I gotcha
You tried to sneak by me, now didn’t ya?
Ha ha
I gotcha
Oh, I gotcha

Though Gary Puckett and the Union Gap’s Young Girl is sweetness and light compared to I Gotcha it too is a sad tale of entitlement. Here our POV is surprised to learn that the girl he is with is underage, a clear Red Flag on the field. Does he stop? Does he say no? Nope, just worries about going, “Too far.” Hey, Jerry Fuller, how far is “Too Far” with a child?

Young Girl
Songwriter: Jerry Fuller

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl
With all the charms of a woman
You’ve kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you’re old enough
To give me love
And now it hurts to know the truth
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl
Beneath your perfume and your make-up
You’re just a baby in disguise
And though you know that it’s wrong to be Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes
Young girl, get out my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl You’re much too young girl
So hurry home to your mama I’m sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here Before I have the time
To change my mind
‘Cause I’m afraid we’ll go too far
Young girl, get out my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl

Times change, mores advance and personal responsibility is always our personal responsibility. Can we all agree that rape, entitlement and sexual conduct between adults and children are No Fly Zones? I gotcha.
