I am a child of privilege
a man who knows that he’s been blessed
but privilege is faceted
like the four C’s of sparkling gems.
We’ve cut, color and clarity,
final carat bespeaks but size,
but blessings given privileged
not silver spoons the truth belies.

Not even once in days of youth
did family have naught to eat,
but if I balked at what was served
I was excused from table seat.
Privilege cornucopia,
our food availability,
went from privilege to blessing
when folks expected more from me.

Parents provided for we kids
myriad life’s necessities
but from a single digit age
labored for fancied luxuries.
Would weed the neighbors’ garden patch
for which I was miserly paid,
what a blessing this lesson was
have work ethic foundation laid.

Privileged to have use of car
to travel from hither to yon
but blessed I was to pay for gas
as I drove old car to my job.
Two cars shared between six drivers,
allotment closely supervised,
blessed to learn lesson give and take
and importance of compromise.

The earning garnered from labors
that I was privileged to do
transmogrified to great blessing
as I was forced to bank my loot.
Though it was I who earned my pay
it was parents dictated path
that I could spend but tenth of it
thereby college fund did amass.

I know my youth was privileged
as I grew on suburban streets
where seldom there was gunfire
that would disturb our blessed sleep.
In no way doubt for an instance
know bountifully life’s been blessed
privilege was elevated
with expectations of success.

I am a child of privilege
a man who knows that he’s been blessed
but privilege is faceted
like the four C’s of sparkling gems.
We’ve cut, color and clarity,
final carat bespeaks but size,
but blessings given privileged
not silver spoons the truth belies.
