There’s this little thing, called the waiting game
It’s a pastime we’re all familiar with
But this game sometimes drives me quite insane
There’s waiting that is fun, like Christmas day;
Anticipation rises steadily
And then in rapture simply swept away
Longing for a thing, like an eager child,
Can make the waiting game a special fun
Even as sheer desire drives us wild
Just like a coin, the game it has two sides;
Oft times I am the one who’s forced to wait
While other times it’s me who drives this ride
Special kind of waiting is World Series game
Damn right I spent my youth in Illinois!
Success for the Cubs too long has lain lame
August forty-five ended World War Two
Two months later Cubs went down in defeat
Long time waiting for Series rendezvous
Zero, six shellacking was quite a shock
ignominy was quickly turned around
Series all tied up; move to Wrigley’s chalk
With home-field venue, optimism rules
One to zero loss adds spice to the game
Two seven blow-out? Cubbies look like tools
Down three to one, Sunday’s final home game
It is a do or die scenario
End of World Series or will Cubs gain fame?
Indians delivered hard fought battle
And Cleveland got off to one, zero lead
Ninth inning outcome? Wrigley was idyll
Final two games back at Progressive Field
Cubs so vulnerable, must go two and oh
Game six owned by Cubs; field they would not yield
Series tied three to three, just one more game
Tonight one team achieves great victory
Other left to ignominy and shame
One-hundred-eight years since Cub victory
Cleveland’s dry spell? Since Nineteen-forty-eight
Not fun of waiting mentioned previously
Tonight ends waiting for Injuns or Cubs
One team will emerge Campeon del Mundo
Other goddess Nike again will snub
Waiting ends this evening, this is the night!
Lead off batter Fowler hits a homerun!Gloriously intoxicating sight!
Bottom of the third, tied up, one-to-one
Chicago comes back roaring with two scores
Bottom of the eighth, looks like Cleveland’s done
Indians are down, but they’re far from out
Three point advantage for Chicago Cubs?
Guyer, Ramirez, Davis halt game’s rout
World Series reduced to a single game
One inning stands between win and defeat
At bottom of the ninth tie score it remains
Extra inning outcome for final clash
Though the waiting is interminable
Game’s dramatic outcome holds such panache
Into every life rain must surely fall
Teams filled with eager anticipation
Waited through rain delay to hear, “Play ball!”
Top of the tenth, Chicago scores two runs
Cubs fans turning blue from holding their breath
Cub defense key to unlock cursed prison
Cleveland at crossroads between shame and fame
Indians achieve solitary run
With dry spell ended Cubs fans go insane!
Win of nineteen-oh-eight was long ago
Sportsman Theodore was in the White House
Big stick touted shines with Chicago glow
World champion Cubs reign at Wrigley Field
Praise be! Curse of the goat is now lifted
Until one hundred fourteenth champ’s revealed
There’s this little thing, called the waiting game
It’s a pastime we’re all familiar with
But this game sometimes drives me quite insane
There’s waiting that is fun, like Christmas day;
